The Best Time of Year for Bass Fishing Near Austin
Here's the honest, short answer: you can catch bass in Central Texas every month of the year - our lakes never close and there's always somewhere biting. But the best time depends on what you're after. If I had to pick one window, it's spring (roughly February through May) - the fish are shallow, feeding and spawning, so you get both numbers and your best shot at a giant. Below is my season-by-season rundown after 26+ years guiding all 16 lakes, plus which lake to fish when.
Quick answer - best time by goal
- Best overall (numbers + a big one): Spring, February-May
- Best for a trophy: Late winter to early spring, December-March
- Best for numbers and kids: Spring through fall
- Best in the heat: Summer - fish early morning or a night trip
- Fastest action: Fall, when the bass are schooling on shad
Spring (Feb-May) - prime time
This is the best all-around time to fish near Austin. As the water climbs into the upper 50s and 60s, bass push shallow to feed and spawn - which means big fish are catchable and the numbers are strong. Pre-spawn, in particular, is your best window all year for a personal best. On clear lakes like Lake Travis you can sometimes sight-fish bedding bass, while Lake Austin gives up its grass-grown giants. If a trophy is the goal, spring on Lake Buchanan is hard to beat.
Summer (Jun-Aug) - early mornings and nights
Summer fishes better than most people think - you just have to time it right. Early mornings, the topwater bite at first light is a blast, and lakes like Lake Bastrop can give up over a hundred bass on a good day. As the sun climbs, the bigger fish slide to deeper structure. On busy lakes I'll start at daybreak to beat the boat traffic, and on Lake Travis or Lake Austin I run quiet, cool night trips when the big ones come out to feed.
Fall (Sep-Nov) - chase the schools
When it cools, bass follow shad into the creeks and coves and start schooling - and this is some of the most fun, fast fishing of the year. It's run-and-gun: find the surface activity and throw a reaction bait into it. Great numbers, comfortable weather, and thinner crowds. Nearly every lake fires up, from Stillhouse Hollow to the Highland Lakes.
Winter (Dec-Feb) - trophy season
Winter is slower on numbers, but it's the best time of year for a true giant. The bigger fish feed up ahead of the spawn, and while much of the area gets tough, Lake Buchanan is just getting good - it's about as reliable a cold-water trophy lake as we have. The key is slowing way down: a jig or craw crawled along the rock is hard to beat. If a wall-hanger is your dream, don't overlook winter.
So when should you book?
Match the season to your goal: come in spring for the best all-around day, winter for your best trophy shot, summer for early or night action, and fall for fast schooling numbers. And because I guide all 16 lakes, I'm not stuck on one body of water - whatever week you come, I'll put you on the lake that's fishing best right then. Not sure which lake fits? Best time to bass fish near Austin - FAQs
When is the best time of year to bass fish near Austin?
You can catch bass here year-round, but spring - roughly February through May - is the best all-around window. The fish are shallow, feeding up and spawning, so you get both good numbers and your best shot at a big one. Summer is early-morning and night fishing, fall is fast schooling action, and winter is the top time for a true trophy.
What is the best season for a trophy bass in Texas?
Late winter into early spring - roughly December through March. Big females feed up and move shallow to spawn, and that pre-spawn window is when the giants are most catchable. Lake Buchanan and Lake Austin are the local picks, with O.H. Ivie and Falcon for a destination trophy trip.
Can you bass fish year-round in Central Texas?
Yes. Our lakes stay open and fishable all twelve months. The pattern and the best lake change with the season, but there's always somewhere biting - that's the advantage of fishing with a guide who runs all 16 lakes and follows the bite.
What is the best time of day to bass fish?
Early morning is almost always best, especially in summer when the topwater bite fires at first light. In the heat I also run night trips on Lake Austin. In the cooler months the middle of the day can actually be the most productive, once the water warms a few degrees.
When is the best time to take kids bass fishing?
Spring through fall, when the catch rate is highest and the weather is comfortable. Lake Travis and Lake LBJ are my go-to family lakes because the fish bite steadily and keep young anglers busy all day.
