Lake Belton is the best lake in Central Texas for smallmouth bass, and a very good largemouth lake as well. It fishes shallow mostly, but there are lots of fish deeper too. A jig or fluke works great for any of them, as do most other lures. There's a healthy white bass population and some stocked hybrids too, and while we're chasing bass we'll sometimes run into those for a hard-pulling bonus. If you're after a quality bass - smallmouth or largemouth - this is a great place to go.

What you'll catch on Lake Belton
This is your best shot at a smallmouth bass in Central Texas, alongside quality largemouth - I've caught a 10.13 pound bass here myself. There are Guadalupe bass in the mix too, plus white bass and stocked hybrids all over the lake for a hard-pulling bonus fish. I release the bass; white bass are fine for the table.
Seasonal patterns on Lake Belton
Spring
Both smallmouth and largemouth move shallow around cover to spawn. The clear water makes for a great sight-fishing and reaction-bait bite, and your best chance at a quality smallie.
Summer
Start shallow with the early bite, then follow the better fish out to deeper structure as the sun climbs. Keep a rod ready for schooling white bass or the occasional hybrid.
Fall
Cooling water has the bass and whites chasing shad around the cover and points - a fun, active time on clear water.
Winter
Fish hold deeper on the clear Corps water; a slow jig or finesse presentation can produce a quality smallmouth or largemouth.
