Bass Rod and Reel Setups for Every Technique
Match the rod to the job. A 7' medium-heavy fast rod covers Texas rigs and creature baits. A 7' medium composite rod handles squarebills and crankbaits. A 7'6" heavy rod is for frogs and flipping jigs, and a 7' medium-light spinning rod covers finesse. Below are the setups I keep rigged in my boat, with the line and reel for each.

- 7' medium-heavy casting rod. It fishes Texas rigs, jigs, spinnerbaits and bladed jigs.
- 7' medium-light spinning rod for drop shots, shaky heads and Ned rigs when the bite is tough.
- 7' medium composite cranking rod for squarebills and crankbaits.
My fluorocarbon pick: try the new Berkley GinClear Fluorocarbon. It's smooth and low-memory, so it casts well as a main line or as a leader on braid. For a backup line, Berkley Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon is a proven choice. Each setup below lists the pound test to buy.
Texas rig & creature bait rod
- Rod7' medium-heavy, fast action, graphite
- ReelBaitcaster, 7.1:1
- Line15-17 lb fluorocarbon
- Hooks & terminal3/0-4/0 EWG offset worm hook, 3/16-1/2 oz tungsten bullet weight
If you buy one bass rod, buy this one. It has the backbone to drive a hook through plastic and pull fish out of brush, and the fast tip lets you feel a bite on the fall.
Techniques: Texas Rig, Brush Pile Fishing
Baits: Ribbon-Tail Worm, Creature Bait, Craw / Craw Trailer
Squarebill & crankbait rod
- Rod7' medium, moderate action, fiberglass/graphite composite
- ReelBaitcaster, 6.3:1 (5.4:1 for long cranking days)
- Line12-15 lb fluorocarbon
- Hooks & terminalSnap or loop knot so the bait swims freely
The composite blank bends deeper and slower than straight graphite. Bass get the treble hooks fully in their mouth before the rod loads, so you lose far fewer fish. It also bounces a squarebill off rock and wood without ripping it away.
Techniques: Squarebill Cranking, Crankbait Fishing
Baits: Squarebill Crankbait, Medium-Diving Crankbait, Lipless Crankbait
Frog & flipping rod
- Rod7'6" heavy, fast action, graphite
- ReelBaitcaster, 7.3:1 or faster
- Line50-65 lb braid (20 lb fluoro for pitching to clear-water wood)
- Hooks & terminalHeavy-wire flipping hooks or straight-shank jig hooks, pegged tungsten weights
Length and a heavy butt give you the leverage to set the hook on a long frog cast and winch a bass out of grass before it buries up. The same rod pitches and flips jigs to docks, laydowns and grass lines.
Techniques: Frog Fishing, Flipping & Pitching, Grass / Hydrilla Fishing
Baits: Hollow-Body Frog, Flipping Jig, Creature Bait
Punching thick matted grass? Step up to a 7'11" extra-heavy with an 8.1:1 reel and 65 lb braid.
Football jig, Carolina rig & swimbait rod
- Rod7'3" medium-heavy, fast to moderate-fast action
- ReelBaitcaster, 6.3:1
- Line15-20 lb fluorocarbon
- Hooks & terminal3/4-1 oz Carolina weight with an 18-36" leader; 1/2-3/4 oz football jigs
The extra three inches move more line on the hookset when you're fishing a heavy bait out on a point or ledge. A 6.3:1 reel keeps you from dragging a jig or Carolina rig too fast.
Techniques: Football Jig, Carolina Rig, Swimbait Fishing
Baits: Football Jig, Swimbait, Straight / Finesse Worm
Spinnerbait & bladed jig rod
- Rod7' medium-heavy, moderate-fast action
- ReelBaitcaster, 6.3:1 to 7.1:1
- Line15-17 lb fluorocarbon (braid for buzzbaits)
- Hooks & terminalTrailer hook for short strikes
A little give in the tip keeps bass pinned on reaction bites and lets you burn a bladed jig through grass without pulling it away from a fish.
Techniques: Spinnerbait, Chatterbait (Bladed Jig), Buzzbait
Baits: Spinnerbait, Chatterbait / Bladed Jig, Buzzbait, Swim Jig
Topwater & jerkbait rod
- Rod6'10"-7' medium, moderate-fast action
- ReelBaitcaster, 6.3:1
- Line15 lb monofilament for topwater; 8-12 lb fluorocarbon for jerkbaits
- Hooks & terminalLoop knot or snap
A shorter rod lets you work the bait with the tip pointed down without slapping the water. Mono floats and stretches, so a walking bait keeps its action and the hooks don't pull out on a blowup.
Techniques: Walking Topwater, Popper, Jerkbait
Baits: Walking Topwater (Spook), Popper, Jerkbait
Finesse spinning rod
- Rod7' medium-light, fast action, graphite
- Reel2500-size spinning reel
- Line10 lb braid with a 6-8 lb fluorocarbon leader
- Hooks & terminalDrop-shot hooks, 1/8-3/16 oz shaky heads and Ned heads, wacky O-rings
When the bite gets tough, especially after a front or in clear water, light line and small baits get bit. Braid gives you sensitivity and casting distance, and the fluoro leader keeps it invisible.
Techniques: Drop Shot, Shaky Head, Ned Rig, Wacky Rig, Neko Rig
Baits: Senko / Stickbait, Straight / Finesse Worm
Deep cranking rod
- Rod7'11" medium-heavy, moderate action, composite or glass
- ReelBaitcaster, 5.1:1-5.4:1
- Line10-12 lb fluorocarbon
- Hooks & terminalSnap
A long rod makes long casts, and long casts get a big crankbait to its full depth on summer ledges. A slow reel keeps your arm from giving out on a day of cranking.
Techniques: Deep Cranking, Offshore / Ledge Fishing
Baits: Deep-Diving Crankbait
Rod and reel setup FAQs
What rod do I need for a Texas rig?
A 7-foot medium-heavy, fast-action casting rod with a 7.1:1 baitcaster and 15-17 lb fluorocarbon. It has the power to drive a hook through the plastic and pull bass out of cover, and the fast tip lets you feel bites on the fall.
What rod is best for squarebill crankbaits?
A 7-foot medium, moderate-action rod, ideally a fiberglass/graphite composite, with a 6.3:1 reel and 12-15 lb fluorocarbon. The softer bend keeps treble hooks pinned so you lose fewer fish.
What rod do you use for frog fishing?
A 7'6" heavy, fast-action casting rod with a 7.3:1 or faster reel and 50-65 lb braid. The length and power help set the hook on long casts and pull bass out of grass.
If I can only buy one bass rod, which should it be?
A 7-foot medium-heavy, fast-action casting rod. It handles Texas rigs, jigs, spinnerbaits and bladed jigs, which covers most of what bass eat in Central Texas.
Should I start with a spinning or a casting setup?
Start with a 7-foot medium-light spinning rod if you are new. It is easier to cast and it is the right tool for drop shots, shaky heads and Ned rigs. Add a medium-heavy casting rod next.
Do I need my own rods on a Texas Hawgs trip?
No. All rods, reels and tackle are provided on every trip. This page is for anglers who want to build their own setups.
