Buzzbait

Topwater technique

A buzzbait is a topwater with a churning blade that gurgles and sputters across the surface, leaving a wake that calls up aggressive bass. It shines at dawn, dusk and in low light around cover, and around Central Texas grass and wood in warm months.

Why: A waking racket that draws blowups.
Evidence: Verified knowledge from Bryan Cotter, 26+ years guiding all 16 Central Texas lakes.

A safety-pin frame with a clacking surface blade, retrieved steadily so it stays on top and leaves a wake.

braid — 30-50 lb braid or 17 lb mono

How to fish the Buzzbait

  1. Cast past the target and start reeling immediately as it lands.
  2. Keep a steady pace so the blade stays on top and churns.
  3. Buzz it right over and alongside cover.
  4. Do not set until you feel the fish — blowups can miss.
  5. Reel-set once the weight loads.

Retrieve: Steady, uninterrupted retrieve to keep the blade on the surface; slow just enough to stay up.

Where it shines

Cover: grass, wood, open; structure: grass flats, laydowns, banks; clarity: stained, clear.

When to use it

Best seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall

Best conditions: Cloud Cover, Calm / Slick Conditions, Warm Front

When Bryan reaches for it: Low light — early, late, and cloudy days — when fish want to chase something across the top.

Lures to throw

Buzzbait.

Common mistakes

  • Setting the hook on the sight of the blowup instead of the feel
  • Reeling too slow so it sinks
  • Skipping a trailer hook and missing short strikers

Pro tips

  • A trailer hook dramatically boosts hook-ups
  • Bend the blade for extra squeak and a slower burn
