Lady Bird Lake - or, as the locals still call it, Town Lake - is a great place to catch some nice bass while enjoying calm water right in the center of Austin, since gas engines aren't allowed here. It holds some very nice largemouth and it's the best jig lake around if you like throwing one. It's also a great spot for big swimbaits, Alabama rigs and other lunker baits. I've won plenty of bass club tournaments here and know where the big ones live.

What you'll catch on Lady Bird Lake
This is a largemouth lake, and a surprisingly good big-fish one for being in the middle of a city - the lake record is over 14 pounds. It's a 14-24 inch slot limit, and I practice catch and release here regardless: the water runs through downtown, so we snap a quick photo and let them swim. It's all about the catch, not the cooler.
Seasonal patterns on Lady Bird Lake
Spring
The shallow, urban water warms early, and the bigger females get active. A jig, swimbait or A-rig fished where the big ones live is your best shot at a trophy.
Summer
With no gas motors allowed, it's a peaceful place to fish in the heat. Early mornings around cover keep the bite going, and a quiet evening session can be pleasant downtown.
Fall
Cooling water has the bass feeding around the cover and banks - a comfortable, scenic time on the water with the skyline in view.
Winter
This is a jig lake at heart, and a slow, deliberate winter presentation is a classic way to pull a true downtown giant.
