Kids & Family Fishing Trips Near Austin
A family bass trip near Austin works best on a lake with a fast bite, a short drive and calm water - for most families that's Lake Travis. I've taken more kids fishing than anyone in my 26+ years of guiding, and I build the whole day around keeping rods bent and kids smiling.
There's nothing better than a kid hooking their first bass and the grin that comes with it. A family trip isn't about the biggest fish on the lake - it's about steady action, short waits and nobody getting bored. I pick the lake, the spot and the bait for that, and I handle the casting help, the knots and the fish handling so parents can enjoy it too.
How I set up a family trip
- The right lake - Lake Travis is the one I recommend most for kids and first-timers: easy to fish with a high catch rate. Lake LBJ fishes shallow, so even kids can catch big ones there. See my best family fishing lakes near Austin.
- Action over trophies - baits and spots chosen for bites, not one cast an hour.
- All tackle provided - rods, reels and baits for every age. Nothing to buy.
- A half day is plenty for young kids - 4+ hours keeps it fun before attention runs out. Older kids and teens often want the full day.
- Catch & release, with photos - my 2025 Phoenix 21 XE carries YOLOtek cameras, so the big moment gets caught on video.
Family trip rates
Rates are per trip, not per person: half day $450, 3/4 day $575, full day $650 for 1-2 anglers, plus $50 per extra person (up to 5 guests in my boat). That count includes anyone riding along, fishing or not. Bigger families can split into two boats - I'll bring another guide. A $200 deposit per day books your date. Full rates and policies.
What to bring
A Texas fishing license for anyone 17 or older (kids under 17 don't need one), sunscreen, hats, polarized sunglasses, snacks and drinks - keep the cooler small. Here's the full what to bring list.
