Offshore / Ledge Fishing

Pattern technique

Offshore or ledge fishing uses electronics to find bass schooled on deep structure — points, humps, ledges and channel edges — away from the bank. In summer on clear Central Texas lakes these deep schools hold the most and the biggest fish for anglers willing to leave the shoreline.

Why: Find the deep schools, catch a pile.
Evidence: Verified knowledge from Bryan Cotter, 26+ years guiding all 16 Central Texas lakes.

How to fish the Offshore / Ledge Fishing

  1. Idle main-lake structure with electronics to locate schools and bait.
  2. Mark the fish and set up for a productive casting angle.
  3. Start with a big search bait to trigger the school.
  4. Follow up with a slower bait to pick off the rest.
  5. Rotate through several spots as fish reposition.

Retrieve: Varies: grind deep cranks, drag football jigs and C-rigs, or slow-roll swimbaits through the school.

Where it shines

Cover: rock, open; structure: points, humps, ledges, channel edges, roadbeds; clarity: clear, stained.

When to use it

Best seasons: Summer, Fall

Best conditions: Summer Heat / Dog Days, Current / Generation, Wind

When Bryan reaches for it: Summer, when the better fish leave the bank and gang up on deep structure — this is where you catch them in bunches.

Lakes where it works

Lake Travis · Lake Marble Falls · Lake O.H. Ivie

Lures to throw

Deep-Diving Crankbait, Football Jig, Swimbait, Alabama / Umbrella Rig.

Common mistakes

  • Giving up on the bank pattern too slowly
  • Not spending time idling to actually find fish
  • Fishing the spot from the wrong angle

Pro tips

  • Let the fish tell you the depth, then focus there
  • Current or generation positions fish and turns the bite on
