Squarebill Cranking

Hard Bait technique

Squarebill cranking runs a shallow, square-lipped crankbait that ricochets off laydowns, riprap and stumps to trigger reaction strikes in 1-6 feet. It is one of the best power-fishing tools for shallow, cover-oriented bass, especially in spring and fall.

Why: Shallow, deflecting, and hard to beat.
Evidence: Verified knowledge from Bryan Cotter, 26+ years guiding all 16 Central Texas lakes.

How to fish the Squarebill Cranking

  1. Pick a squarebill that runs 1-6 feet.
  2. Cast to shallow wood, rock or a bank.
  3. Reel it into the cover and let it deflect off.
  4. Keep reeling through the deflection — strikes come right after.
  5. Let the moderate rod load up on the fish.

Retrieve: Steady retrieve that bumps and deflects off shallow cover; occasional pause after a deflection.

Where it shines

Cover: wood, rock; structure: laydowns, riprap, stumps, banks; clarity: stained, muddy, clear.

When to use it

Common mistakes

  • Avoiding cover instead of hitting it
  • Too stiff a rod ripping the bait away
  • Reeling too fast to feel deflections

Pro tips

  • Bounce it off everything — deflection is the trigger
  • A red craw pattern shines in the pre-spawn
