Rig technique
The drop shot suspends a small soft plastic above a weight on the bottom, so the bait hovers in place at a fish's eye level. It is the top finesse rig for clear Central Texas lakes, tough post-front days, and picking off bass and smallmouth you can see on electronics.

How to fish the Drop Shot
- Tie a small hook onto your leader with a Palomar knot, leaving a long tag end.
- Run the tag back down through the hook eye so the hook stands out from the line.
- Attach a drop-shot weight to the tag end 8-18 inches below the hook.
- Nose-hook a finesse worm and cast to the target.
- Keep the weight on bottom and shake the rod tip in place, then pause.
Retrieve: Let the weight rest on bottom and shake or quiver the bait in place; move it a foot and repeat.

Common mistakes
- Too heavy a weight — you lose the subtle action
- Moving the bait too much; often the best action is barely any
- Fishing braid straight to the hook in clear water instead of a fluoro leader
