Finesse Fishing

Presentation technique

Finesse fishing means downsizing to small soft plastics on light line and spinning gear to get bites when bass are tough — clear water, cold fronts, and pressure. It is the backbone of catching numbers on Central Texas lakes and the best way to target the native Guadalupe bass.

Why: Small baits, light line, more bites.
Evidence: Verified knowledge from Bryan Cotter, 26+ years guiding all 16 Central Texas lakes.

A family of light-line, small-bait spinning presentations (drop shot, shaky head, Ned, wacky) built to draw bites from finicky fish.

How to fish the Finesse Fishing

  1. Pick a small soft plastic and a finesse rig for the situation.
  2. Fish light braid to a fluoro leader on a spinning setup.
  3. Make long casts and let the light bait work slowly.
  4. Keep contact and detect the subtle bites.
  5. Sweep-set — don't rip with light line.

Retrieve: Slow and subtle — shake, drag, or dead-stick depending on the rig; let the light bait do the work.

Where it shines

Cover: rock, open, docks; structure: points, bluffs, docks, brush; clarity: clear.

When to use it

Best seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall

Best conditions: Post-Frontal / Bluebird, Cold Front, Water Clarity

When Bryan reaches for it: Any time the bite is tough — clear water, bluebird skies after a front, or pressured fish — and my go-to for Guadalupe bass.

Lakes where it works

Stillhouse Hollow · Lake Belton

Lures to throw

Straight / Finesse Worm, Senko / Stickbait, Fluke / Soft Jerkbait, Tube.

Common mistakes

  • Line too heavy for a natural presentation
  • Fishing it too fast
  • Trying to horse fish on light line instead of using the drag

Pro tips

  • A quality spinning reel with a smooth drag saves light-line fish
  • Match the bait to the forage and downsize until they bite

From Bryan's logbook

Based on Bryan Cotter's on-the-water observations.

Repeatable pattern · corroborated
Stillhouse is one of the rare Central Texas lakes with a smallmouth population, so there's a real chance at a big smallie - the biggest from my boat was 6 pounds.
