A jerkbait is a suspending minnow-shaped plug worked with sharp jerks and long pauses to imitate a dying shad hanging in the water column. It is a premier cold-water, clear-water bait, drawing big bass and smallmouth on Central Texas lakes from late fall through spring.

How to fish the Jerkbait
- Cast out and reel down to get the bait to depth.
- Snap the rod to make it dart erratically.
- Pause — the longer and colder, the better — and let it suspend.
- Vary the number of jerks and the pause length.
- Set when you feel the fish or the line jumps.
Retrieve: Jerk-jerk-pause; long pauses in cold water (up to several seconds), shorter and faster in warmer water.
