Best Trophy Bass Lakes in Central Texas

If a fish of a lifetime is the goal, a few Central and South Texas lakes stand above the rest. Here are the ones I'd point a trophy hunter to, best shot first.

1

Lake O.H. Ivie

On O.H. Ivie, any cast could be a giant.

Lake record 17.06 lbs · Trophy 5/5 · Numbers 2/5

2

Lake Falcon

You haven't caught a real largemouth until you've caught one here - they're the meanest bass on the planet.

Lake record 15.63 lbs · Trophy 5/5 · Numbers 3/5

3

Lake Austin

Find the grass, you'll find the bass.

Lake record 16.03 lbs · Trophy 5/5 · Numbers 2/5

4

Lake Buchanan

Buchanan is my favorite lake in Central Texas, and if you're after a quality fish, it's where I'd send you.

Lake record 11.73 lbs · Trophy 5/5 · Numbers 3/5

5

Canyon Lake

The hydrilla is the thickest I've ever seen it, and the largemouth are in it good.

Lake record 12.18 lbs · Trophy 4/5 · Numbers 3/5

6

Lake Belton

The best lake in Central Texas for smallmouth bass, and a very good largemouth lake too.

Lake record 13.97 lbs · Trophy 4/5 · Numbers 3/5

7

Lake Marble Falls

A little gem tucked between the more popular Travis and LBJ.

Lake record 11.18 lbs · Trophy 4/5 · Numbers 3/5

Bryan's verdict

If I could book one trophy trip, it'd be Lake O.H. Ivie or Lake Falcon - that's where the genuine giant lives, and both are worth the drive. If you want a real shot at a big one without leaving the Austin area, Lake Austin's grass is the best bet, and Lake Buchanan is the one I'd fish in winter.

On O.H. Ivie, any cast could be a giant. A few years ago it produced the most big bass entered into the Texas ShareLunker program, and every year it puts out some giants.

Related FAQs

What is the best bass fishing lake near Austin?

It depends on your goal. For numbers and first-timers I start people on Lake Travis - easy water and a high catch rate. For a shot at a true trophy, Lake Austin's grass or downtown Lady Bird Lake are hard to beat. In winter I'd point you to Lake Buchanan. Tell me what you're after and I'll match you to the right lake.

Where can I bass fish near Austin without a boat?

There are shore-access spots around town - I keep a rundown on the Fishing Places page. For the best day on the water, though, a guided boat trip puts you on far more (and bigger) fish.

Is Lake Travis good for beginners and kids?

It's the lake I recommend most for kids and first-timers. It's easy to fish and the catch rate is high, which keeps young anglers having fun and bending rods all day.

Is Lake Austin good for trophy bass?

It's one of the best trophy lakes in the area - some of the largest bass around have come out of Lake Austin, including the lake record over 16 pounds. If you're after a lifetime-record fish, there's a good chance this is where you catch it.

Not sure which lake fits your trip? Tell me your goal and group, and I'll put you on the right water.
