Punching Heavy Cover

Presentation technique

Punching drives a heavy tungsten weight and compact craw through matted hydrilla and thick vegetation to reach big bass buried in the shade beneath. On grass lakes like Canyon it is the way to pull giants out of cover nothing else can penetrate.

Why: Break through the mat to the giants.
Evidence: Verified knowledge from Bryan Cotter, 26+ years guiding all 16 Central Texas lakes.

How to fish the Punching Heavy Cover

  1. Peg a heavy tungsten weight tight to a compact creature bait.
  2. Position over the thickest part of the mat.
  3. Punch the bait straight down through the cover to the bottom.
  4. Give it a couple of hops in the hole, then reel up if no bite.
  5. Set the hook hard and immediately get the fish up and out.

Retrieve: Punch through, hop a few times in the open pocket under the mat, then pull out and move.

Where it shines

Cover: grass; structure: matted hydrilla, vegetation; clarity: stained, clear.

When to use it

Best seasons: Summer, Fall

Best conditions: Summer Heat / Dog Days, Calm / Slick Conditions

When Bryan reaches for it: On thick-grass lakes in the heat, when the biggest fish bury up under the mats for shade and ambush.

Lakes where it works

Lake Austin · Lake Falcon · Canyon Lake

Lures to throw

Creature Bait, Craw / Craw Trailer.

Common mistakes

  • Weight too light to punch through cleanly
  • Slow, weak hookset in heavy braid
  • Not being ready — bites often come the instant it breaks through

Pro tips

  • A compact bait punches better than a bulky one
  • Keep the fish's head up and coming so it can't bury
