The best lures to use on Lake Falcon in South Texas

Lake Falcon is one of the most awesome lakes in the country and your best chance anywhere at a double-digit largemouth. I always say you haven't caught a real largemouth until you've caught one here - they're the meanest bass on the planet. Here are the lures I count on for these South Texas giants. And here's my rundown of the best bass fishing lakes near Austin for the bigger picture.

Frogs - the bite you have to see

You should see how these big bass blow up on a frog when that bite is on - it's like a bomb going off. A frog worked over and around the cover is one of the most exciting ways to catch a Falcon giant, and it holds up even when the summer heat shuts other lakes down.

Flip the heavy cover

Falcon is big, wild water full of brush and cover, and the biggest fish live tight to it. A Texas-rigged creature bait or big worm flipped and punched into the heavy stuff is a classic way to pull a true trophy out of it, especially in the pre-spawn and spawn.

Crankbaits and swimbaits for big fish

When the bass are feeding up, a big crankbait or swimbait run past the brush and structure covers water and calls up the giants. Everything is bigger on Falcon, and these baits match the mood of a lake built for big bass.

Fish it right, at the right time

The cooler months and the pre-spawn/spawn are prime for the biggest fish of your life, but Falcon can produce giant five-bass limits even in the blistering summer when most lakes quit. It's a trip of a lifetime - and I now offer all-inclusive packages to Falcon and other lakes through Texas Bass Adventures if you'd like everything taken care of.

Let me know if this helps, and if you're ready to chase the fish of a lifetime, reach out and let's plan your Falcon trip.
