Water condition

The thermocline is the summer layer where warm, oxygenated surface water meets cold, oxygen-starved deep water. Below it there's little oxygen, so bass and bait hold at or above the thermocline. On deep clear lakes, knowing that depth tells you exactly how deep to fish offshore.

The thermocline is the transition layer in a stratified lake where temperature drops sharply and oxygen falls off, setting the lower limit of where bass hold in summer.

Reading it on the water

  • A clutter band on your 2D sonar at a set depth
  • Bait stacked at one depth
  • A hard temperature break on the graph

Find the thermocline on your electronics and fish at or just above it — don't waste time below.

Why not fish below the thermocline? There's no oxygen down there in the heat, so there are no fish — once I spot the thermocline band on the graph, I know the exact depth to focus on and I don't bother dropping a bait beneath it.
