Lake Buchanan Fishing Report - February 23, 2008

Fished the Fisher's of Men tournament on Lake Buchanan. There was another big field of 71 boats, still biggest in the country here in Central Texas. My partner pre-fished the day before and went to a couple spots that I told him about to check out since he'd never been on the lake before. He found a few in the 3-4 lb range in the first spot and a nice one close to 7 in the second spot so things were looking good.

Tournament morning we started out on a spot that has been producing for me lately and we could not get bit. We then headed over to another spot that I caught 3 nice ones off of during a tournament I fished last month. Still nothing. I then decided to go hit one of my old reliable spots still saving the other spots that my partner caught fish the day before at since he caught them later in the day. We started cranking the outside with no takers so we went into the shallow cut and I picked up my frog and started chunking it. On the 3rd cast, a nice 5.5lber slammed it and we quickly landed her. This was in 53 degree water. Crazy! Nothing else around there though so we fished on down the bank and a few hundred yards later I hooked into another nice one over 4 lbs on a shallow crank. We continued on to a rocky point where I knew some brush piles were in 15-20 foot of water. I pulled 2 little ones off of that with my Mr. Blitz Craw Clicker jigs w/a craw trailer. After fishing this area for a while, we decided to go hit the areas we were saving. We pulled into the first area and caught one around 1.5-2lbs to complete our limit to give us around 14-15lbs. We worked our way into the back of the creek/cut but no takers there. We then headed down to the next cut and Justin caught 2 more in the back of that one, edging our weight up. Right around the bend though was where he caught his big one the day before so we were saving that till last. There was a nice small rocky point though just before so I drug my crankbait along side it and a nice one close to 5 pounds hit it. It felt like I was dragging some brush or something till it started shaking it's head. That fish got us close to 18lbs. We could not get bit on the spot where the big one was caught yesterday so we went looking for similar structure layouts. Going back into another cove I noticed a deep cut going way back into this nothing looking place and a dock came to the edge of it. Nothings better than this setup I thought. I pitched my jig into the end of it and a fish came racing out but I missed the hookset. I pitched right back in just a few feet back and another slammed it. It only felt like a small one as it swam around in a figure 8 it seemed. Luckily it was our biggest fish of the day going 5.87 at the scales. Sweet! I had no idea of the weight but when my partner Justin asked if we had 15-16lbs I told him definitely over that probably over 18 not realizing what they weighed till the weighin and they were 21.88lbs! We were very blessed with this weight and held on for the win.
