Lake Travis Fishing Report - November 8, 2008

Lake Travis has been fishing well all year. It's probably the best year it has ever fished by far. I know of 2 12 pounders and even a 13 pound bass in this past year out there. This day turned out a lot of action again. My friend Kelley Mauldin and I fished the Fisher's of Men Open from 6am till 2pm. We started out in one of my favorite cuts throwing big worms and jigs. I had a solid hit only to come up with my 10" worm ripped in half but soon had another bite on a crankbait and the first small keeper was in the boat. Kelley soon followed with a very nice 3 pounder on a jig. We ran out of bites there so decided to head on. After working another spot across the lake with no luck, we decided to go hit my hottest spot as of late and it paid off. We started off on the outside of it catching small bass but no quality bites. Kelley started the action off with the jig yet again by working the middle of the cut and just started catching one after the other while I worked on a backlash. Talk about bad timing. He filled in the limit quickly with another 4 or 5 keepers with 2 of them being 3 pounders. On the other side of the cut, he hooked into another solid 3+ pound fish which came off right at the boat.

We were sitting on 12 pounds and needed another solid fish. That 3lber we missed was hurting a little now. I headed back around the bend and pulled into another cut very similar to the other one. I put on a jig with a grub trailer that I used to catch a 5.5lber 2 years prior in a tournament in this cove and on my 3rd cast, I hooked into a solid fish that came up thrashing. I asked Kelley to get the net but by the time he did, the fish jumped and thrashed again and threw my jig. It looked to be pushing 4 pounds. Ouch. That wasn't what we needed. After working around to the middle of the cut, I got slammed again on this jig. The fight was short though and I didn't get a good hook in it. That pretty much was it at that point and we headed to the weigh-in. Those 2 fish ended up costing us at least top 3 if not the win. But that's fishing and it's what keeps you coming back. We ended up in 10th place with 12lbs and the last check.
