Lake Travis Fishing Report - December 15, 2007
On the water December 15, 2007 · Lake Travis · by Bryan Cotter, Texas Hawgs
Great day on the water. Started out nice, temps outside in the 50's and water temp 62.7. Worked a shallow crankbait to start out and landed a few keepers in a small cut off mainlake upriver. I worked my way to the back and landed a 3 pounder. I then started working a Craw Clicker Jig and caught some off laydowns. After working the back of the cut, I headed across the lake and hit another cut. I caught a few decent ones up to 2 lbs. There was a couple boat docks on the other side of this cut so I headed to them and started working the jig again. I caught a few largemouths and guadalupes but no good ones. I then headed down just a bit and pulled up on a nice looking dock, just off main lake. I pitched up under the start of the walkout to the dock and my line started heading back at me. I set the hook only to have the fish pull me straight down and it started peeling drag. I knew I had a hawg on! Bad part was it wrapped up in the cable holding the dock and it broke off. What a strong fish though. I continued pitching in and around this dock, landing several good fish up to 3lbs. There were quite a bit holding under this dock and back in the cove behind it. Nice.
I wanted another chance at a big one so I headed up river to another really nice cut. At this time, the wind was really kicking up and there were 4 foot rollers on main lake. I stopped on the outside of this cut to make a few casts before the big waves knocked me into it. I hooked up on a really nice smallmouth that started jumping all over the place but it came unbuttoned just before I got it to the boat. I caught a lot of fish in this cut and I found a nice boat dock in the back. I flipped my jig to the same spot where I broke off on the big one earlier and I got hit right away on this one too. After setting the hook, the fish started peeling drag and really shaking it's head. I knew it was another big one but it found it's way off somehow under the dock after a brief fight. Weird. I've never had a big fish pull off a jig like this one did before. Anyway, I had another good fish pull off of a crankbait right before I finished the day at 1pm. All in all, I landed 40+ fish in 5 hours with the best 5 "landed" bass around 13lbs. I would have loved to have seen just how big those 2 big girls were. Contact me for a trip to Travis. It's been great most of the time lately.
