Choke Canyon Fishing Report - September 17, 2007

Fished from 7am till 4pm. Fishing started out a little slow but quickly came to life when bass started schooling off the outside edge of the grassline we were on. They were chasing tiny shad up from the deeper water into the top of the grass. Soft and hard jerkbaits, traps and crankbaits were the most productive baits. We ended up with around a dozen in that area up to 3 lbs having one about 6 lbs throw the bait. We then decided to go check out another area that I found the prior week after a few other boats moved into the area we were at. I was very excited when, on the very first cast, a giant bass blew up on a frog but I couldn't get a hook in her when the frog flew about 10 feet into the air. Next cast, another large bass blew up and again, missed the frog throwing it up in the air. I now knew that the fish were here. And in the next several hours, we proceeded to catch and land several dozen bass all between 2.5 and 4 lbs, breaking off on 1 giant (actually seeing the fish just under the surface sucking in the bait), and having 3-4 8+ pounders throw the bait. When setting the hook on a house with too much power, 20 lb mono tends to break. I used 17lb fluorocarbon and 65lb braid the rest of the day and I never broke off again. ;-)

All in all, one of the most amazing days I've seen out there in a while. If we landed all of our fish, we may have come close or over a 50lb stringer.
